About The Barbados Association of Professional Engineers (B.A.P.E.)

The Barbados Association of Professional Engineers (BAPE) is the national voice of the engineering profession in Barbados. Founded in 1964, we are a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to uniting engineers across all disciplines and career stages—from students to seasoned professionals. Our primary mission is to:
BAPE represents the profession on technical, regulatory, and advisory bodies, ensuring that engineers have a say in shaping Barbados’ infrastructure, safety standards, and development policies. We also provide a platform for professional networking, continuing education, and community outreach.

Through conferences, seminars, site tours, and partnerships with institutions like the University of the West Indies, BAPE supports lifelong learning and leadership within the profession. We are also a key contributor to the Engineers Registration Board and other regulatory frameworks in the Caribbean.

Our History

The Barbados Association of Professional Engineers (BAPE) was formally established on October 2nd, 1964, following several months of planning by a steering committee dedicated to creating a unified body for engineers in Barbados. This committee met four times to prepare a draft constitution that would guide the Association’s formation and future operations.

The inaugural General Meeting took place on November 19th, 1964 at the Drill Hall, where the first Council was elected. Sir Frank Hutson was appointed as the first President, leading a team that represented the diverse branches of engineering in the island.

From its earliest days, BAPE sought to bring together professionals from civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering under one umbrella—promoting knowledge-sharing, ethical standards, and a strong collective voice. Over the decades, the Association has evolved into a respected authority on engineering matters, actively contributing to public policy discussions, infrastructure planning, and professional development in Barbados.

BAPE’s emblem – the stylized Bridge – symbolizes the integration of four core engineering disciplines:
Electrical/Electronic Engineering – Represented by the electronic bridge with diodes
Mechanical Engineering – Represented by the ball and socket joint
Civil Engineering – Represented by the suspension bridge
Chemical Engineering – Represented by the chemical formula for water (H₂O)
This emblem reflects the unity of the profession under one association, emphasizing both diversity and strength in collaboration.
